Program Overview

The Secondary Learning Center, operated by the Ingham Intermediate School District, is a special education program for students in grades 8-12 with severe emotional and behavioral problems. Student from throughout the 12 local communities are referred to the program by school district special education directors. Typical Secondary Learning Center students are between the ages of 13 and 26.

The Secondary Learning Center has a full-time staff of 15. This includes a principal, teachers, a behavior management specialist, paraprofessionals, and a secretary. Counseling services are available five days a week by a school psychologist and a school social worker. Services of other teacher consultants and specialists are available on a case by case basis as needed. The staff is committed to help all students move into less restrictive settings after modifying old behaviors and learning new behaviors. While the focus is on modifying and changing behavior, students are also working on academics and earning credits toward a high school diploma.

Further information about the programs and services offered by the Secondary Learning Center, may be obtained by contacting Denise Lycos at (517) 244-1354.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Secondary Learning Center to provide a supportive educational alternative to adolescents with emotional/behavioral difficulties which have created barriers to learning.  Our goal is for students to achieve reintegration to a local district program or fulfillment of graduation requirements, while modifying behavior and developing appropriate social interaction skills.
