Position Summary
Plan, construct, alter, and repair a wide variety of tools, dyes, fixtures, and machinery where accurate relationship and fitting requires maintenance of very close tolerances.
Responsibilities
- Make tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, special machinery try-outs, and diagnose and correct problems
- Set-up and operate all tool room equipment, including but not limited to a mill lathe, CNC equipment, and EDM
- Must use constant care in safety precautions when constructing, altering, or debugging special machinery
- Must be accountable for process, evaluation, measurement, documentation, and improvement on a continuous basis
- Must be able to plan, construct, altar, and repair a wide variety of tools, dyes, fixtures, and machinery
- Must be able to operate all tool room equipment, such as lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, etc.

- Vocational education or apprenticeship training.
- 3+ years as a Toolmaker or applicable experience in machine shop
- Limited heat treating and welding desired

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Perform maintenance of all plant machines and equipment. Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical and mechanical maintenance of all plant machines and equipment. Learn all functions of Maintenance Technician and Mechanic Positions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform a wide range of general building and equipment maintenance, such as plumbing, general electrical, carpentry, sheet metal and fabrication design, and sheet metal repair work.
- Safe working knowledge and skills including mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Must be able to weld and use metal cutting equipment.
- Design and recommend machine or physical designs to address a wide variety of plant or facility needs.
- Install guards and see that machines are lubricated and properly operational.
- Coordinate and/or perform equipment preventative maintenance and preventative maintenance programs.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical malfunctions and breakdowns, recommend and initiate proper activity to repair.
- Disassemble, repair and rebuild mechanical units, mechanisms and machines.
- Utilize maintenance equipment (including but not limited to: saws, grinders, mills and CNC lathes, etc.) to perform machining duties as needed. Knowledge of feeds & speeds.
- Communicate with and utilize outside services and support as necessary to troubleshoot problems, provide project and maintenance assistance and offer technical resources.
- Support and assist other maintenance personnel as directed by department supervisor.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/ NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Detect and report unusual conditions to supervisor.
- Support and adhere to all applicable OSHA regulations and requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness of department floors and machinery.
- Qualify for a forklift driver’s license and a sky jack operator’s license.
- Follow all department policies and procedures; responds and performs all tasks as assigned by supervisor.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills with all levels of employees and management.
- Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Use personal safeguards for hands, ears, feet, and eyes as prescribed.
- Perform related and other duties assigned by Lead, Value Stream Team Leader, Value Stream Manager, Plant Manager, or any other individuals of authority within the facility.
- Required to participate in Parker’s “Lean” initiatives and improvement programs.
- Actively participates in and supports continuous improvement team activities and projects (i.e. High Performance Teams, 10-step Problem Solving, 5-Why’s, Process audits, Corrective Action Requests, etc).
- Follow all policies and procedures.
- Follows and supports Parker’s Employee Handbook, Values, and Code of Ethics.
- Work safely in accordance with regulations, standards, and procedures in a manner that eliminates risk to health and the environment. Notify leadership of unsafe conditions or practices unlawful activities and activities which present unreasonable health and/or environmental risk. Report all safety and/or environmental incidents to leadership immediately.
- Participate in peer-based teams (i.e., Natural High Performance Teams), and work with groups to initiate and implement programs such as Lean Manufacturing and 5-S
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education required:
High School diploma or GED equivalent required
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
Experience:
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, operating, and maintenance manuals.
0 – 2 years experience in a maintenance position or applicable experience
Experience in a manufacturing setting required

- Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading machines gages, prints and precision measuring instruments
- Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action is required
Skills/ Competencies:
1. Basic computer skills; Microsoft office, including Excel and Word
2. Experience with basic computer hardware (turning on/off computer, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer.)

Agency information - Country Harbor Agency
Superior Brass is a 3rd generation foundry in East Lansing that manufactures brass castings for fire hydrants since 1924.
You will have the opportunity to work with metal casting and foundry equipment to help process brass castings from start to finish. Our castings are mainly used to assemble fire hydrants which are then shipped across the county. We take pride in producing quality castings that help keep people safe.
We start our new hires in our "clean up" department. This is where we clean up metal castings with air tooling, grinding wheels, shot blasters and robots.
We provide on the job training for this physical, yet rewarding, job. This is a potential career entry position.
Communication, dependability and teamwork are a must.
