Ingham ISD Thanks Senators Anthony and Singh for Leadership with Senate Bill 911

Senator Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing), who is the Senate Appropriations Chair, and Senator Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) played a key role in getting Senate Bill 911 passed.

This bill is an important step in helping Michigan’s public schools and their staff have more financial stability.

Senate Bill 911 permanently lowers the amount of money school districts must pay into the Michigan Public School Employee Retirement System (MPSERS) by 5.75%, districts currently pay over 20%. These savings can be redirected toward classroom resources and improving educational outcomes for students statewide. In addition, teachers who are currently paying 3% for retiree healthcare will no longer need to pay into the system as it is overfunded.

“We deeply appreciate the leadership of Senator Anthony and Senator Singh, whose commitment to Michigan’s schools and educators has been essential in the passage of this historic legislation,” said Jason Mellema, Superintendent at Ingham ISD. “Their efforts will have a lasting positive impact on school communities, allowing districts to invest more in students and teachers and reduce financial stress on employees.”

Passing Senate Bill 911 shows that the Michigan Senate understands how much public schools and their employees have given over the years to support the MPSERS fund. By cutting the amount schools pay and removing the 3% employee contribution, this bill offers much-needed relief while keeping the retirement system steady for the future.

“We hope the Michigan House of Representatives will agree to these important changes, and that Governor Whitmer will sign this bill into law,” added Mellema. “Thanks to the leadership of Senators Anthony and Singh, Michigan’s public schools are moving towards stronger financial security, which will benefit teachers, students, and communities for years to come.”
